Scaling the company

Ignore until then

Most of this lecture is not for day one. Park it for months 12–24 / ~25 people / post-PMF. Early flat “everyone → founder” is optimal — until it fails all at once around 30.

Management

Clear reporting: one manager per person. Do not innovate on org charts. Common founder-manager failures:

  1. Afraid to hire senior executives (wish they’d done it earlier).
  2. Hero mode — stop and hire even if tickets slip for two weeks.
  3. Bad delegation (bring me data, I’ll decide) → trust them to decide.
  4. Personal organisation collapse — track goals and follow-ups.

Write down how and why early (wiki). Founders who wait regret it.

HR

Not sitcom HR — structure, performance feedback, compensation bands, equity refreshes (plan ~3–5%/year for a decade). Stay ahead of vesting cliffs. Option admin software beats Excel disasters. Rules change ~50 employees. Watch burnout; full-time recruiter once things work; announce offers internally; ramp plans. Diversity of perspective early; plan careers for first 10–15 when they can’t all be VP.

Productivity

Alignment > process theatre. Roadmap everyone can recite. All-hands, weekly staff, quarterly plans, offsites. Ship daily if needed to keep product focus. Goal: repeatable innovation for decade-scale excellence — not one hero release.

Mechanics later

Books/audits, legal document collection, FF stock around B (not as seed vanity), provisional patents at ~11 months post-announce, trademarks/domains, FP&A models, tax structuring (early window), maybe an internal fundraiser vs banker dilution.

Founder psychology

Highs higher, lows lower. From underdog to hated. Commit long-term (10 years). Vacation. Don’t lose focus to conferences/advising. Avoid acquisition sniffing unless you’d sell low. Companies die when founders quit for psychological reasons — manage that.

Marketing / BD later

Founders own messaging and key journalist relationships — not PR flacks. Deals need great product, personal connection, competition, persistence, and asking for what you want.

Closing image (Airbnb founder)

Find PMF by getting uncomfortably close to users. Expect launch spike → death-dip → long trough of sorrow (Airbnb ~1,000 days) → false hope wiggles → finally growth. Long and doable.
